The Studio

A couple of months back, I decided to fulfill a dream of mine and bought a 24 track digital recorder (An Alesis HD24) because I have always loved recording, and I thought it would be a good way to record the band live and at rehearsal. When I mentioned it to Steve, I found out he had also had a similar dream, of having a studio in his house. So, the Studio Project was born. We thought it would be nice to show progress as the studio is being put together, so this page is all about the studio and it's birth.

This photo shows the framing Steve has done for what will be the control room window. This entire room is where we rehearse, which is why you see equipment everywhere. If you're wondering why the wall is at an angle, it's because acoustic environments aren't supposed to have any parallel walls for reasons a bit too arcane to get into here. The easiest way to avoid parallel walls is to set them at angles to each other.
The two photos above show the main control room window from both sides. The left is from the studio side, the right is the control room side.
These two are from inside the control room. The drawing is to make it a bit clearer as to the actual shape the room will take.
And here we are looking out the window into the studio, at Tom who is busily practicing his little heart out.
The mix position, the heart of the whole enterprise. The table with the red chair is pretty much where the mixer will end up. I have no idea what the table the mixer will be on will look like, but it will probably be something with one or two racks on either side and of course the monitors, which will be in front of the mixer on a stand or stands of some kind.
At some point, we figured out that we would have some extra space at the rear of the control room and that, hey, wouldn't it be cool to have a drum room? A drum room is something many studios have, it's essentially a very reflective room, lots of hard surfaces so you get a lot of echo in a small space. It can be used for drums obviously, but also for guitar amps, back up vocals, anything where you want a nice natural reverb. These two pictures are looking through where the door will be into the room.
And these are also the drum room. The left picture is looking from inside the room back into the main studio and the right is the main area of the room itself.
We already have some of the electronics that will be going in as soon as the rooms themselves are complete. The stack of boxes on the left are the mixer, a Mackie D8B digital 56 input fully automated console, and the monitors, which are Mackie HR824s. The recording itself will be on my Alesis HD24, and we're also looking into putting in a computer with Cubase SX and a bunch of other software on it for doing mixdowns on.
Finally, a shot from the outside, so you can see where the studio is located. We are on the top floor of the building marked "Music" which is located directly in front of the famous Sutton racetrack
